Kutaisi Gender Advisory Council (GAC) started a new project "Strengthening of the gender aspects for active inclusion in the formation of local gender policies." The project is co-financing by Kutaisi City Hall and the fund "Sukhumi".

On April 21 in frames of the project a regional conference was held in "Grand Palace", on "Gender component in the local budget - the current reality, the positive developments, the prospects for the future."

The conference was attended by representatives of local self-government 17 municipalities of Western Georgia - Kutaisi, Batumi, Ozurgeti, Senaki, Zugdidi, Poti, Tskhaltubo, Khoni, Vani, Samtredia, Kharagauli, Zestafoni, Terjola, Tkibuli, Kobuleti, Chokhatauri, Lanchkhuti, as well as members of the GAC, rectors of universities, professors, students, representatives of NGOs and the media.

In the first part of the conference members of GAC of Kutaisi, Ozurgeti, Batumi and Senaki told about the results in terms of gender, achieved in cooperation with local governments.

In the second part the speakers discussed the topic of equality in different contexts. The conference was concluded with the report "Gender needs of students and their integration into the formation of the local budget."

The first phase of the project was completed. Discussions on the issues discussed at the conference will continue in Kutaisi universities.

Ozurgeti Gender Advisory Council (GAC) begins to study gender needs. There were chosen target group for the inquiry as well as the respondents for the in=depth interview.

GAC members covered the groups whose needs are less reflected in the budget.

The inquiries  will be conducted with socially unprotected women, young people, ethnic minorities and women, engaged in small business. During the focus groups there will be fixed needs of IDPs, teachers, health workers, single mothers and mothers with many children. It was also decided to hold a focus group with community leaders to identify more problems. There will be selected experts in health, education, agriculture sphere and people with disabilities.

Batumi Public Library hosted a presentation of the book of writer and public figure, Professor Ramaz Surmanidze "Fundamentals of the age-sex education of children and adolescents." The book was published with the financial support of the Fund "Sukhumi". The event was opened by the Director of the library Gennady Makharadze, who congratulated Mr. Ramaz with the publication of the 71st book.

Opinions about the book were expressed by: Professor Akaki Beridze, reviewers - Professor Shorena Vashadze and Doctor of Education Marina Gurgenidze, representative of the Fund "Sukhumi" Natia Kikvadze, chairman of the Supreme Council of Adjara Autonomous Republic Avtandil Beridze, member of the City Council of Batumi Nato Zoidze poet Tsisana Antadze, writer Anna Dundua. Female vocal ensemble "Batumi" performed songs in the Batumi center of culture.

At the end of the meeting Ramaz Surmanidze responded to questions.

The ordinary meeting of GAC was devoted to the definition of the target groups of the research of local gender needs, discussion of research methods. The research will be completed in May and on the basis of the analysis of the results, Gender Council will make recommendations to the budget in 2017.

At the meeting, there were planned activities in frames of the new project, financed by the local government and the Fund "Sukhumi", aimed at prevention of domestic violence in rural areas.

The first organizational meeting with the representatives of Gamgebeli and majoritarian parliament members will be held April 25, after which in 14 territorial units of Senaki municipality there will be established gender action groups. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the role of women and youth in the processes of prevention of domestic violence.

On this day in Kopitnari kindergarten there was held a real celebration: all inventory was changed - tables, chairs, cabinets, library were supplemented with new books.

The action was carried out by Fund "Sukhumi" within the framework of the project "Improving the conditions for the IDP community."

The project inventory was transferred to the three kindergartens (kindergarten №1 and №2 of Tshalutbo and kindergarten №8 of Kopitnari). These pre-schools were selected by the principle of more IDPs children. Kopitnar kindergarten is designed for 65 children and the majority of them are from IDP families.

The event was attended by representatives of local government and senior officials of kindergarten associations.

On April 6, the fund “Sukhumi was in Tskaltubo” to the kindergarten №2 and delivered equipment for the staff: wardrobe - 3 units, book shelves 2 units, chairs for teachers 12 units, chairs for children – 100 units, tables for children – 20 units and books.

Transfer of equipment was held in frames of the project "Improving the conditions for the IDP community" (the project of Chez NGO “involvement of the youth and social reporting” – supported by the World Bank)

The event was attended by the head of Tskaltubo Municipality Administration, representatives of local self-government, the head of association of kindergartens, manager and kindergarten teachers.

In frames of the project in the beginning of April it is planned to equip kindergartens №1 №2 in Tskaltubo and Kopitnari -Tskaltubo Municipality.

Representatives of the local government said that the project is directed to improvement of educational area of children and this type of activity is too important for the future.

Within the frames of the project "Improving the conditions for the IDP community" Fund "Sukhumi" transferred equipment  to the kindergarten №1 Tskhaltubo: wardrobe - 7 units, 2 cabinet for toys, 3 tables for teachers, book shelves - 2 units, chairs for teachers - 12 units and books.

The event was attended by the head of Tsqaltubo Municipality Administration, representatives of local self-government, the head of association of kindergartens, manager and kindergarten teachers.

In frames of the project in the beginning of April it is planned to equip kindergartens №1 №2 in Tskaltubo and Kopitnari -Tsqaltubo Municipality.

Representatives of the local government said that active cooperation with non-governmental sector and similar projects are very important for the municipality.

Meeting of Ozurgeti Gender Advisory Council (GAC) was held in unusual format. For more media – response, it was attended by the journalists, specialists of the press service of local self-government.

Chairperson of the GAC Lela Natsvaladze submitted a report about meetings in frames of municipal “Program of Supporting villages”. It was underlined that it is a very low inclusion of women and accordingly gender needs are not raised. It was fixed an opinion that it is necessary to protect gender balance on similar meetings and it will promote to  implementation of gender projects.

Lawyer of the GAC Tamaz Trapaidze submitted a report of conducted work. Attention was paid to the problems, which are advocated with difficulties. It was decided that members of the GAC will be actively involved in the process.

Informational meeting in Ozurgeti kindergarten No1, was attended by the representatives of the fund “Sukhumi” and the member of Sakrebulo and Gender Advisory Council – Irina Sajaia.

The kindergarten staff mentioned that the children are provided by good condition, they have toys, warmth and caring. It has been said about their low salaries and that they would take part in training sessions on gender and other interesting topics for them.

Active women were invited to a meeting of the Club of Women-Voters, which will be held in April, and issue put during the meeting was considered on the same day, at a meeting of the Gender Advisory Council. It has been recorded to develop a training program for kindergartens in the coming months.

In the meeting room of Sakrebulo of Kutaisi there was a presentation of fund "Sukhumi" research - "Assessment of women's human security level in Western Georgia." The event was attended by a wide spectrum of society, representatives of Swedish organization Kvinna till Kvinna in the South Caucasus.

Participants with interest studied the results of the research, which was conducted under the joint Georgian-Abkhazian project. Many questions were raised, which once again revealed the risk factors, common for the Abkhazian and Georgians women. As well as the different levels in health care and social protection, protection from domestic violence, etc.

The participants made evaluations that there is qualification and work done by the Fund "Sukhumi" while working on the research. They identified the issues that are causing serious harm to the safety of people living in the conflict zone, including - infringement of the rights to education in their native language.
